In
“Canada Case History” Earle Birney compares
Canada
to a pre-adolescent. Later, Birney wrote these lines for a
more grown-up Canada
“too busy bridging loneliness
to be alone
we hacked in railway ties
what Emily[1] etched in bone
we French and English never lost our civil war
endure it still
a bloody civil bore”
